Evaporated milk is milk that has been thickened by removing water. It is heat treated and can be made with the addition of dry milk products and adjustment of the protein content.
Coffee cream must contain at least ten percent fat. It is made without the addition of dried milk products and without adjusting the protein content. Coffee cream can sometimes only be kept refrigerated. Thanks to homogenization (even mixing of the fat and water components), the coffee cream does not settle on the surface, but combines well with the hot drink.

Origin

Boiled whole milk, for example as a basis for desserts, was known in India long before industrial production. A French confectioner came up with the idea of ​​preserving milk in cans at the beginning of the 19th century. In Germany, condensed milk was first offered in 1886.

Season

Condensed milk and coffee creamer are produced all year round and are therefore available all year round.

Taste

Mildly sweet with a hint of caramel. The taste varies in intensity depending on the fat content.

Use

Condensed milk or coffee cream is mainly used to “whiten” coffee, coffee substitutes or tea. Even if many coffee drinkers nowadays prefer “real” milk, many still appreciate the longer-lasting condensed milk or coffee creamer that is available in smaller packaging sizes. In addition, condensed milk, especially sweetened milk, is also used in the production of pralines, pastries – such as a milkmaid cake -, desserts or our milkmaid ice cream and spreads such as dulce de leche.

Storage

Unopened, heat-treated condensed milk and creamer can be stored in the pantry. Some coffee cream can only be kept refrigerated, so pay attention to the information on the packaging. Opened packs generally belong in the refrigerator and should be used within about a week.

Durability

Evaporated milk and heat-treated creamer can be stored unopened for several months. Coffee cream that needs to be kept refrigerated has a shorter shelf life.

Nutritional value/active ingredients

1 tablespoon of condensed milk (approx. 15 ml) contains around 20 kcal, depending on the fat content. 1 tablespoon of coffee cream (approx. 15 ml) provides an average of 30 kcal.
