Curb appetite – how do cravings come about
Whether you get cravings depends a lot on what you eat.
- Basically, your body makes itself known with hunger when it needs energy supplies. The insulin level plays a decisive role in this.
- If you eat sweet or high-sugar foods, the body produces a lot of insulin to get the sugar from the blood into the body’s cells.
- The blood sugar level rises quickly at first, but then falls rapidly again. However, insulin is still present. The result is that the body demands a supply of carbohydrates. This is shown by cravings.
- In addition to these physical processes, the psyche can be involved in cravings. Those who suffer from stress or boredom get cravings for food more easily.
- There are some things you can do to curb your appetite and avoid cravings.
Five tips against food cravings
After we explained in the first section which factors can be responsible for cravings, we can already derive some measures against cravings.
- Proper nutrition: Give your body what it needs in terms of nutrition. On the one hand, this means sticking to regular meals. Also avoid sugary foods. Tip: If you like chocolate, keep it in the freezer. Frozen, you probably nibble much less of the hard chocolate.
- Drink a lot: Drink at least 1.5 liters throughout the day. Water or unsweetened tea is best. With the liquid in your stomach, your body thinks your stomach is full of something nutritious and hunger goes away. By the way: In some cases, the body not only signals its desire for food through cravings. Sometimes it’s just a sign of thirst.
- Spinach: Spinach is not only healthy and low in calories. The vegetable is also able to curb appetite. The reason for this are certain components of spinach, the so-called thylakoids. On the one hand, these substances cause fat digestion to be delayed. In addition, after eating spinach, the body releases a specific hormone that curbs appetite: the hormone GLP-1.
- Protein-rich food: Proteins have the advantage that they fill you up for a long time. That doesn’t just mean that hunger is a long time coming. A nice side effect is that you eat less overall and thus lose weight. Your body also needs protein to build muscle. It is recommended that 15 to 20 percent of the diet should consist of protein.
- Reduce and avoid stress: As already mentioned in the first paragraph, the psyche plays an important role in food cravings. If you reduce stress and avoid stress, you will also suffer less from food cravings. An important factor here is getting enough sleep. In addition, relaxation exercises such as autogenic training or yoga help to reduce stress.
