Dark Chocolate: It Really is That Healthy

Dark chocolate is so healthy

Unlike milk chocolate, dark chocolate has some health benefits.

  • Milk chocolate contains a lot of sugar. Dark chocolate with at least 85% cocoa contains less, sometimes even no, added sugar and is therefore far healthier.
  • With around 480 calories per 100 grams, dark chocolate has fewer calories than whole milk chocolate with 570 calories per 100 grams.
  • Due to the low milk content, it also contains less lactose. It is therefore better tolerated by people with lactose intolerance than whole milk chocolate.

More Health Benefits of Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate offers other health benefits as well.

  • Due to the high cocoa content, dark chocolate contains a particularly large number of nutrients and antioxidants from cocoa beans. These work against stress and inflammation.
  • Dark chocolate protects the skin from sun exposure. The contained polyphenols accumulate in the skin and protect you from harmful free radicals. These hit the skin with UV radiation.
  • Since the polyphenols already mentioned can reach the brain even in small amounts, mental performance is increased. This is especially true for older people.
  • Reducing inflammation in the body also lowers blood pressure and improves insulin metabolism.
  • Despite the benefits mentioned, you should still note that excessive consumption of dark chocolate is not conducive to your health. Cocoa, especially from South America, often contains cadmium, which damages the kidneys and is carcinogenic in large quantities.
