Roast coffee yourself – you need green coffee for this
Green coffee beans are not edible to humans. Roasted, however, they become a popular luxury food.
- You can easily obtain green coffee from the Internet. When buying, make sure that you also order your desired variety.
- Raw coffee beans are green. Roasting gives you a color ranging from light brown to dark brown. The color of the beans depends on the length of the roasting process.
- Light or pale roast, also known as a cinnamon roast, turns the beans the color of cinnamon.
- Light brown to chestnut-colored beans is referred to as medium roasting.
- Medium brown beans have experienced a heavy roast.
- In order for the coffee beans to get a dark brown hue, they have to go through a double roasting process.
Roast your own coffee in the pan
In the pan you can roast coffee similar to nuts:
- First, heat the pan to 200-220 degrees.
- Distribute the green coffee beans in the hot pan. Very important: You must stir the beans regularly – at least every 30 seconds – so that they are roasted evenly.
- You will hear the beans cracking after about 5 to 10 minutes. Also, the beans are now starting to steam. Open the windows now at the latest and ensure good ventilation. The smoke can be quite heavy.
- After about 17 minutes you will hear a second click. Now you can take the pan off the stove and let the coffee beans cool down. This works best if you transfer the beans to a dry, cold container.
- Of course, you can shorten or lengthen the roasting time depending on the desired degree of roasting and taste.
Roast your own coffee in the oven
In addition to the pan, the oven is also suitable for roasting coffee:
- You also have to preheat the oven to 200-220 degrees. If you use convection, you don’t have to turn the beans.
- Distribute the green coffee beans in one layer on the baking sheet so that they are not on top of each other. The beans shouldn’t be too tight either, as they will increase in size during the roasting process.
- Place the tray with the beans in the preheated oven.
- With this method, too, the beans begin to crackle softly after 5-7 minutes. The sound is a bit reminiscent of popcorn. From now on the beans should take on color.
- Take the beans out of the oven as soon as the color you want – i.e. roasting – has been reached. However, you should not open the oven door in between. Too much heat is lost and the roasting process is interrupted.
- To cool, return the hot beans to a dry cold container.
