Spicy salad from South Africa, good as a side dish to roasted or grilled meat, can be prepared

Pit and quarter the dates. Halve the onion and then slice into rings. Briefly blanch the onions in boiling salted water. Remove from the water, rinse with cold water, and drain well. Finally, squeeze out the water. Finely grate the dried chili. Alternate the dates, onion rings, and chili in a bowl. Gently heat the two vinegars with the sugar until the sugar dissolves. Do not boil! Pour the vinegar mixture over the prepared salad while it is still warm. Cover the salad and let it sit for a few hours. Arrange the alfalfa sprouts on a plate and top with the salad.
