Defrost the Fridge Quickly – 5 Tips

Spread the love

We will tell you how to defrost the freezer compartment of your refrigerator correctly and, above all, quickly. Basically, you should defrost the refrigerator regularly and at least once or twice a year. This way you save a lot of energy.

Tip 1: Defrost the fridge when it’s cold

  • So that you don’t have to throw away the groceries, you should only defrost the refrigerator when it’s cold outside. We’ll show you a few ways to accommodate the food.
  • Put the food in a cold room or outside in winter.
  • Alternatively, you can also take a cool bag and put the frozen things in there.
  • Also, ask neighbors if it is possible to store your groceries there temporarily.
  • Alternatively, you can schedule the defrost and use up the food before defrosting the freezer compartment.

Tip 2: Switch off the refrigerator before defrosting

  • With many refrigerators, it is possible to defrost the freezer compartment independently of the refrigerator.
  • Nevertheless, it makes sense to switch off the device completely:
  • On the one hand, you can take the opportunity and clean both areas at the same time.
  • On the other hand, the cooling capacity could skyrocket because the temperatures suddenly increase. It is therefore possible that your refrigerator’s motor is overheating. Especially if the freezer compartment and the refrigerator cannot be switched off separately, you absolutely have to switch off the entire refrigerator.

Tip 3: Melt the ice

  • If you are in a hurry or want to melt the ice quickly, you should help:
  • Take an ordinary hair dryer and stand with it in front of the freezer compartment. The ice is slowly beginning to melt.
  • If you want it to go a little faster, you can boil water and place it in a pot or in a cup in the freezer, for example. Close the doors and wait for the ice cream to melt.

Tip 4: Catch the water

  • To avoid flooding your kitchen, you should first check how thick the layer of ice is. Then proceed differently in each case.
  • If the layer of ice is thin, you can spread a towel under and in front of the refrigerator to catch the water.
  • You can also place a small and very flat bowl, a lunch box, or a baking tray in front of the refrigerator to be able to collect more water.
  • If the layer of ice is thick, you should also take additional precautions: Use a bucket and larger spoons made of wood or plastic. If the ice is slightly thawed, carefully break out individual pieces and place them in the bucket. Gradually, the blocks of ice can be broken off more and more and disposed of in the sink. This way your kitchen won’t be flooded afterward. However, be very careful when doing this to avoid damaging the freezer compartment.

Tip 5: Clean the fridge

  • Take a bucket of fresh water and add a little dish soap. Wipe through the fridge and freezer compartment with a cloth.
  • Alternatively, you can grab a bucket of warm water and add a little vinegar. Then clean the refrigerator with this liquid after defrosting.
  • Remember to dry the fridge before putting the food in it.
  • Also, read what you should consider when storing food in the refrigerator.
