Dried Plums – a Popular Snack

Dried plums are also called prunes. They are particularly rich in nutrients. They are available sulphurised or unsulphurised. Dried plums are bluish-black, shiny, and with a partial white coating.

Plums are a species of plant in the rose family. The fruits vary in size, shape, and color depending on the variety. There is a wide range of colors between black, blue-black, blue, blue-red, violet, red, yellow, and yellow-green. For drying, the plums are left to ripen on the tree in the heat of the sun for as long as possible until they are slightly wrinkled. Then they are harvested and dried in the oven or dehydrator under heat. Due to their high water content, drying them whole in the air is not possible – the drying process would take too long and the plums would start to get moldy. The drying time for plums is around 20 hours, during which time the blue-purple fruits shrink to become black, tasty dried plums. About 1 kg of dried fruit is obtained from 3-4 kg of plums.
