No tolerance for histamine in coffee
Most types of coffee contain virtually no histamine. Nevertheless, coffee is sometimes not very digestible for people with histamine intolerance:
- Caffeine blocks the diamine oxidase enzyme, which is responsible for breaking down histamine in the body.
- Caffeine also stimulates histamine production in the body.
- So it aggravates the clinical picture of people with histamine intolerance.
- Coffee can increase blood pressure, stimulate bowel movements and cause acid to enter your stomach. This sometimes aggravates your symptoms, such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or high blood pressure.
Coffee enjoyment or wake-up kick despite histamine intolerance
If you suffer from histamine intolerance, coffee should be enjoyed with caution:
- Decaffeinated coffee is a fairly healthy alternative and you can get it from good roasters that taste great.
- In many situations, going to the coffee machine and taking a short breather is much more relaxing and better for concentration than caffeine.
- In this case, you can easily switch to grain coffee and herbal teas.
- But if you are longing for a caffeine kick, it is better to grab an espresso shot than filter coffee or even mocha. Due to the short contact between water and coffee powder, there is less caffeine and less acid in the drink.
- Alternatives to caffeinated drinks are, of course, energy drinks containing taurine. But beware: only theobromine-free drinks are considered tolerable.
- Enough sleep and sufficient breaks, no overwork, and no low blood sugar would of course be particularly healthy alternatives to caffeine. Especially in combination with an afternoon nap.
