Effects of Caffeine – What You Should Know About It

In addition to the positive effect of caffeine as a pick-me-up, it also has negative effects. Anyone who has ever drunk too many cups of coffee knows the problem. If the dosage is too high or if it is consumed very regularly, side effects cannot be ruled out.

The effect of caffeine on the body

Most people get caffeine from coffee. But cola and various energy drinks also contain caffeine. Caffeine tablets contain a particularly large amount of the substance. The substance has the following effects on humans:

  • If you consume caffeine, it increases your heart rate.
  • In people who only rarely consume caffeine-containing stimulants, blood pressure increases in addition to heart rate.
  • On a practical level, this has the effect that tiredness can disappear and concentration increases.
  • Caffeine also constricts the vessels in the brain. As a result, the substance can relieve or drive away various types of headaches and migraines.
  • Even some athletes rely on caffeine because the higher heart rate means that the muscles can be better supplied with oxygen. This makes you more efficient.

Side effects of caffeine

If you consume too much caffeine, this has negative effects and the following symptoms can occur:

  • nervousness and restlessness
  • panic attacks
  • sleep disorders
  • circulatory problems
  • depressive mood
  • You should not consume more than 400 mg of caffeine per day to avoid side effects. For comparison: coffee contains 50 mg per 100 ml and cola contains an average of 10 mg per 100 ml. Depending on the type of drink, you will therefore consume different amounts of caffeine. A rule of thumb says that four cups a day is safe for an adult. But it depends on the strength of the coffee.
