Freeze asparagus properly – that’s how it works
- First, wash the asparagus spears to remove any dirt or other residue. Once you’ve cleaned the sticks, you should peel them. You can use an asparagus peeler for this.
- After the shell is removed, inspect the rods for possible other contaminants. Anything that no longer looks fresh or good should be removed. If you freeze asparagus that is no longer perfect or has been lying around for several days, the flavor will be lost after thawing.
- Now you can cut the asparagus into small pieces. This makes it easier to freeze. However, if you want to freeze the sticks in one piece, you need a suitable container for it. Make sure the bars are not crushed and bruised. These spots no longer taste fresh after defrosting.
- Note: Do not cook the asparagus before freezing. If cooked asparagus is frozen, it loses its freshness and no longer tastes good. It is best to eat cooked asparagus right away.
- You can now freeze the asparagus spears in a freezer bag or in a plastic container. In a solid container, the asparagus is less likely to bruise.
- Tip: Don’t leave the asparagus in your freezer for longer than half a year, because over time it loses more and more of its freshness. Once you take it out to prepare, you should put it directly into boiling water. If you thaw the asparagus at room temperature, it will become very soft.
