Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 6 salted herring(s)
  • 1 bottle of mineral water
  • 4 onions, red
  • 2 carrots
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 1 tsp allspice, whole
  • 2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 ginger
  • ¼ liter vinegar, light
  • 150 g sugar

Instructions

Working time approx. 20 minutes; Rest period approx. 2 days; Total time approx. 2 days 20 minutes

Soak the gutted herring overnight in a mixture of half mineral water and half water. Then skin and debone the fish, cut into 2 cm wide pieces, and layer them in a jar with sliced ​​onions and carrots and the spices. Bring the vinegar and sugar to a boil, let it cool, and pour over the herring. Let it marinate in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
