Gloster – a Bell-Shaped Apple

Spread the love

A typical sign of identification are the numerous lenticel openings, which are caused by tearing open the uppermost cell layer and appear as white dots. Gloster is tall, almost bell-shaped. The color is strong dark red with a slight blue tinge.

Origin

Gloster is a cross between Bell Apple and Richard Delicious, bred in 1951 in Altes Land (in Jork). Widespread in Western Europe since 1969.

Season

Gloster is ripe for consumption from November to May.

Taste

The apple tastes mildly aromatic thanks to its finely fruity, restrained acidity.

Use

Gloster is the perfect table apple, but also suitable as a baked apple or for apple sauce.

Storage

Like most apple varieties, the Gloster variety can also be stored well if the conditions are good. Humidity is important because Gloster can become floury if stored dry. In cold storage, the apple variety even lasts until April. What to avoid is storing apples with other fruits. The natural ripening gas ethylene is given off by apples, and this causes other fruits to age faster. Pears, bananas, but also tomatoes are considered sensitive to ethylene and should therefore not be stored together with apples.
