Whether you prefer a wine from Germany or France: in addition to the location, the grape variety always plays a major role in the taste. The grape varieties can be classified differently. Depending on the intended use, for example, a distinction can be made between grape varieties for red wine, grape varieties for white wine, and grape varieties for champagne. In combination, connoisseurs derive the typical taste from the cultivation area and grape variety and put their favorites in the wine cellar. Popular red grape varieties in France include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Ugni Blanc, among others, top the list of popular white grape varieties. Common grape varieties in Germany are Riesling and Pinot Noir, in Italy the red varieties Sangiovese, Merlot, and Montepulciano, and the white Trebbiano, Malvasia and Grillo dominate.
