Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 8 slices of toast
  • 175 g Gruyère
  • 4 slices of cooked ham
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 tbsp sunflower oil
  • 15 g butter

Instructions

Working time approx. 10 minutes; Cooking/baking time approx. 10 minutes; Total time approx. 20 minutes

Cut the cheese into 8 slices. Top 4 slices of toast with 1 slice of cheese each, then 1 slice of ham, and then another slice of cheese. Cover with the remaining slices of toast. Beat the eggs well with a whisk or fork. Toss the slices of toast in the mixture until all the liquid is absorbed. Heat the oil and butter together in a pan. Fry the toast in batches over medium heat for 4 minutes on each side. They should be golden brown and the cheese melted. Keep warm and serve immediately when all the toast is done. Variation: For a change, replace the cooked ham with smoked turkey breast or fine salami. Serve the ham and cheese toast with grilled tomatoes or a tomato salad with spring onions and vinaigrette.
