Khrenowukha – Ukrainian specialty with horseradish and honey

To make Khrenovukha a success, you shouldn’t skimp on the vodka. It’s important not to use Doppelkorn or anything similar – only Russian vodka. “Moskovskaja” or “Stolichnaja” are best, both of which are available in German grocery stores. Peel and coarsely grate the horseradish and ginger, add honey and chili. Pour vodka over everything in a glass container, seal it airtight, and keep it in a dark place. Let it steep for 4-5 days, strain it through cheesecloth. Store in a cool place. Drink it cold – Khrenovukha is a delight even on a hot summer day. A crisp pickle goes perfectly with it! By the way, a small glass of Khrenovukha at the first signs of a cold is said to be effective in preventing the illness.
