figs stuffed with walnuts, a recipe from my mother
Remove the stems from the figs. Pour boiling water over the figs and soak for about 30 minutes. In the meantime, combine the water and sugar in a saucepan and stir until the sugar dissolves. Simmer this mixture gently for about 30 minutes. Roughly chop the walnuts. Now stuff the softened figs with the walnuts. To do this, press your finger into the fig (where the stem was removed) and press down the flesh. Stuff the walnuts into the fig and then slightly squeeze the opening. Place the figs in a sufficiently large pan or saucepan. Add the water and sugar mixture to the saucepan. Add enough so that the stuffed figs are just covered with the sugar and water. Cook the figs over medium heat for about 20 minutes. Then let them cool and let them stand overnight or for a few hours. The quantities given above should yield two stuffed figs per person, but this can vary. You can also mix cinnamon into the walnut mixture. For decoration, you can sprinkle pizzi powder or desiccated coconut on the figs, or add a little whipped cream. Walnut ice cream or walnut parfait go very well with them.
