Is Jam Vegan? – All Info

Marmalade, jam, and jelly

  • Since jam is only made from sugar, pectin, and fruit, it is always vegan. The ingredients for jams are specified by law.
  • However, what we call jam is mostly jam. And therein lies the difference.
  • In principle, jam may be made from fruit that is either peeled, pitted, and divided into pieces or mashed. Honey is permitted as a substitute for sugar in jams and extra jams. And honey is not vegan.
  • Jelly usually consists of thickened fruit juice or fruit juice mixtures. Gelatine is permitted as a thickening agent here – and it is also not vegan.
  • Care should also be taken with fruit spreads. These are not subject to the EC Directive 2001/113/EC on the ingredients of jams, jellies, marmalade, and chestnut cream. Therefore, these spreads may also contain animal products.
