An Italian coffee specialty made from plenty of frothed milk and espresso. “Latte macchiato” means “stained milk”. Originally, some espresso was simply poured into a glass of hot milk. North of the Alps, it has become common practice for the individual ingredients to be served in clearly defined layers in the glass. For this, the espresso must be hotter than the frothed milk, then it floats on the milk layer, which has a higher density.

Taste
Creamy, airy whipped milk with a fine touch of coffee: latte macchiato almost tastes like a delicious dessert. The drink is also often refined with syrup, for example with caramel and chocolate flavor.
Use
Tastes good for breakfast, replaces dessert after a meal, and sweetens the afternoon.
Storage/shelf life
For a latte macchiato, the espresso beans should ideally only be ground immediately before preparation. The milk should also be fresh. This is how the full, creamy aroma comes into its own. An opened pack of ground coffee loses its aroma within a week or two – but that doesn’t mean that the coffee is spoiled. Unopened and not stored too warm, airtight packed coffee can be kept for up to 12 months.
Nutritional value/active ingredients
Because of the milk, latte macchiato naturally has more calories than regular coffee. Without sugar or syrup, one glass (200 ml) provides around 88 kilocalories or 366 kJ. It also contains around 6 g protein, almost 3 g fat, and 8 g carbohydrates.
