Licorice Root Tea: Overview of Effects and Application

Effect of licorice root tea at a glance

The roots of licorice have a health-promoting effect.

  • Licorice root tea has an anti-inflammatory effect.
  • The tea also liquefies the mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up. It is a proven remedy for colds.
  • In addition, the licorice root, and thus also the tea made from it, has an antiviral and antiulcerogenic effect. This means that it protects against viral diseases and prevents the development of ulcers – in medicine, these are called ulcers. Drinking licorice root tea regularly can, for example, prevent a stomach ulcer or support the healing of the stomach lining.
  • Those who like to drink licorice root tea will suffer less from heartburn.
  • As always, however, when enjoying licorice root tea, the amount matters: too much is unhealthy. Drinking large quantities can lead to shifts in the electrolyte balance and increase the sodium level in the blood. In addition, the potassium level can fall.
  • In addition, water accumulation in the tissues can form, so-called edema, and blood pressure can rise with excessive consumption.

How to use the health tea

You probably know licorice root in a different form – as licorice. By the way, we will clarify whether licorice is healthy in another article.

  • The use of licorice root tea actually results from the effect.
  • On the one hand, you can use it, especially in the cold season to protect yourself from infections.
  • If you still caught a cold, it helps to cough up more easily.
  • If you have problems with your stomach or intestines that are associated with increased acid production, you may be able to protect yourself from a stomach ulcer with licorice root tea. At least it gives relief from heartburn.
