Limquat (also known as mini lime) belongs to the rue family and is a hybrid of lime and kumquat.
Origin
Israel, South Africa.
Taste
Limquat flesh is light yellow to green and has a juicy, sour taste.
Use
Limquats are particularly suitable for raw consumption – as a small vitamin bomb in between. They are also used for cocktails and desserts.
Storage
Limquats are very sensitive to pressure and cannot be stored for long. At room temperature for about four to five days, in the fridge for about one to two weeks.
What does a Limequat taste like?
It has a sweet-tasting skin and a bitter-sweet pulp with a flavor similar to limes. The fruit can be eaten whole or the juice and rind can be used to flavor drinks and dishes.
What are limequats good for?
While native to Florida, Limequats are cold hardier than limes, and are gaining in popularity among home gardeners thanks to their ability to produce a lot of fruit each season (which typically runs from mid-fall through March). Besides being very tasty, limequats are an excellent source of vitamin C and folic acid.
What is a Limequat tree?
The Limequat is a self-fertile cross between the Kumquat tree and the Key Lime, (or Mexican Lime). This versatile little fruit can be eaten without peeling, like a Kumquat. They are also great for their juice, and have a sweeter, more orange-like taste than a Key Lime.
