Lychee (also known as Chinese hazelnut or lychee plum) is spherical to nut-shaped. Reddish nubs adorn their thin, leather-like fruit skin, which turns brown and becomes brittle after harvesting. In the middle of the flesh is a smooth and inedible core.
Origin
South Africa, Madagascar.
Taste
Their pulp looks milky, is very juicy and mildly sour towards a light rose aroma.
Use
Lychees are ideal for raw consumption. You can easily get to the shiny, juicy flesh by slitting the top of the skin and peeling it off as if you were peeling an egg. Lychees give fruit salads, ice cream desserts, or long drinks an exquisite touch, but they also taste great in all kinds of meat or fish dishes. But be careful: only heat the fruit briefly, otherwise, they will become tough.
Storage
Lychees are best stored in a plastic bag in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator. The fruits will keep there for up to two weeks. Lychees freeze well with their skins on. They can be kept for up to six months.
