Onions stewed grandma's way

Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 750 g onion(s), sliced
  • 1 tbsp rapeseed oil
  • 50 g smoked bacon, fat, diced
  • some sugar
  • 125 ml water
  • some salt
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp water, cold, for the cornstarch
  • some lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • 2 tbsp mixed herbs, chopped

Instructions

Working time approx. 30 minutes; Cooking/baking time approx. 50 minutes; Total time approx. 1 hour 20 minutes

Heat the oil, fry the bacon, and remove it. Brown the sugar in the pan. Add the onions and heat briefly, then add the water and salt. Cover and sauté the onions over low heat for about 40 minutes. Thicken with the cornstarch mixture, season with salt and lemon juice, and serve sprinkled with herbs.
