Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 1,000 g plum(s) (preferably small, juicy ones)
  • 1 lemon(s)
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • 2 carnations
  • 2 anise (star anise)

Old German Latwerge

Pit the plums, roughly chop them, place them in a large terrine or saucepan, add the spices, and place in the oven. Simmer at approximately 120°C for about 2 hours. Stir occasionally. Be careful not to burn. The syrup should be dark and thick. Add the lemon juice half an hour before the end of cooking. Suitable for those with a sweet tooth and diabetics. It tastes fruity and will keep for over a year in standard screw-top jars.
