Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 1 kg flour
  • 150 g butter, soft
  • 500 ml milk, warm
  • 50 g yeast, fresh
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp cardamom
  • 1 egg(s)
  • 150 g sugar
  • Butter, melted
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp sugar (fine granulated sugar)

Working time approx. 35 minutes; Rest time approx. 1 hour; Total time approx. 1 hour 35 minutes

Whisk the egg with the sugar, crumble the yeast into the lukewarm milk, and add the egg mixture to the milk along with the salt and cardamom. Mix everything briefly and let stand for 10-15 minutes. Then add it to the flour, add the softened butter, and knead everything into a smooth dough. Let it rise for 1 hour. Divide the dough in half and roll out into two equal sheets. Brush one sheet with a little melted butter, mix the caster sugar with the cinnamon, and sprinkle it on the greased sheet. Place the second sheet on top and press down firmly. Cut thin strips from the shorter side, about 7 mm wide, and tie the strips into knots. Place on a baking sheet lined with baking paper and bake in a preheated oven at 200°C until golden brown. This pastry can also be frozen immediately after baking and baked from frozen as needed.
