Rumtopf containers are also available secondhand. Clean the container thoroughly. The time required varies depending on the type of fruit. All fruit must be washed, dried, and stemmed before being added to the rumtopf. Greengage and mirabelle plums are not pitted. Mix the fruit with the sugar and let it steep for 2-3 hours. Large fruits are halved and quartered. After adding sugar, add the fruit to the rumtopf and cover with rum. Start with the strawberries. They are steeped in the same amount of sugar and then covered with a whole bottle of rum. All seasonal fruits are steeped in half the amount of sugar! Check every 2-3 weeks to make sure the fruit is well covered with liquid. Stir the fruit mixture with a wooden spoon – use this wooden spoon only for the rumtopf!
