We traditionally have salt sticks on New Year’s Eve

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius (400 degrees Fahrenheit). Knead the flour, butter, salt, sour cream, yeast, milk, and sugar into a dough and let it rest in the refrigerator for 30 minutes, wrapped in plastic wrap. Then halve the dough, roll it out thinly on a floured surface, brush with egg yolk, sprinkle with salt, caraway, poppy seeds, or sesame seeds, and use a pastry wheel to cut out sticks no more than 15 cm long and 0.5 cm thick. Carefully place these on a baking sheet lined with baking paper and bake on the middle rack of the oven until golden brown. This takes about 8 minutes. The pretzel sticks will keep for a long time in a tin—if they survive.
