Scientists Tell How Drinking Coffee Can Help Fight a Dangerous Disease

For all coffee lovers who can’t imagine a day without a few cups of their favorite drink, American scientists have made an interesting discovery.

If you drink coffee regularly, you have a chance to help your body in its fight against Alzheimer’s disease. This conclusion was reached by scientists from Edith Cohen University, who conducted a long-term study involving several hundred Australian residents.

In addition, the study revealed the effect of coffee on the prevention of cognitive decline in 227 elderly patients who did not show signs of dementia. The participants’ health was monitored for 126 months. In a subgroup of volunteers, the relationship between drink consumption and the accumulation of beta-amyloid in brain tissue or brain size was analyzed. Beta-amyloids are considered a major factor in the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

Patients who did not suffer from memory impairment and regularly consumed coffee at the beginning of the study had a lower risk of developing mild cognitive impairment, which often precedes Alzheimer’s disease. Coffee also prevented the accumulation of beta-amyloid but had no effect on the degree of gray and white matter atrophy or shrinkage of the hippocampus, the brain region responsible for long-term memory formation.
