Seattle Cream Cheese Dogs

Heat the butter in a pan over medium heat, add the onion slices, and sauté for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally; they should be golden brown. Heat the cream cheese in a saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally, until it is very soft. Heat a little fat in a pan over medium heat. Add the hot dog sausages and cook on both sides until well browned. Briefly toast the hot dog buns in the toaster, including the inside. Spread the warm cream cheese on the buns, place the sausages on top, then the onions and mustard. Finally, top with sauerkraut, if desired.
