The optimal storage of the tea
The right container is particularly important for the durability of the tea.
- Store your tea, no matter what type it is, in airtight, opaque, and easily sealable containers.
- There was either already tea in the teapot, if possible of the same type, or you take a completely new container. Tea takes on the aroma of other substances very quickly.
- As tea quickly takes on odors, do not place the tea containers close to other products with a strong smell.
- On the other hand, it doesn’t matter what material the tea container is made of. You get tea storage boxes made of stainless steel as well as containers made of fine cherry wood or stylish porcelain tea boxes.
- It is best if you use two containers for each type of tea. Every time you open the tea caddy, oxygen gets into the container, which is particularly detrimental to the health-promoting active ingredients in the long run.
- A large tea caddy serves as a storage container and a small caddy contains the tea for everyday use.
- Store the tea containers in a cool and dry place, this applies in particular to the large storage jar. A room temperature between 18 and 20 degrees is ideal for the tea.
- It is very convenient, but also very unfavorable for the tea to be stored near the kettle or similarly damp kitchen areas.
The shelf life of the various types of tea
Especially if you keep different types of tea or like to buy them in advance, put a label on the tea tins.
- Write the name of the type of tea and the expiration date on the tea tin label. The purchase date is not so favorable because it does not show how old the tea actually is.
- Depending on the type of tea, storage for up to three years is not a problem.
- Green and black tea can usually be stored for up to two years, just like rooibos tea.
- Fruit and herbal teas, on the other hand, should not be kept for longer than a year, since the health-promoting effect tends toward zero over time.
- In principle, however, you should inquire about each tea in advance as to when the respective tea type loses its aroma and active ingredients.
