The Doctor Told What Kind of Cherries are Dangerous to Buy

Cherry in the sun

Sweet cherries, even if partially spoiled, can cause gastrointestinal upset. Nutritionist Olga Korablyova explained what to look for when buying cherries. She also spoke about the consequences of eating spoiled berries.

“Unlike many other fruits and berries, cherries are picked only when they are fully ripe. After it is plucked from the tree, the ripening process stops. Then the cherry can only deteriorate,” says the expert.

According to her, if the stalk is dark in color, the product is not too fresh. The berry should be firm, without cracks and, especially, traces of mechanical damage: soft and moist cherries spoil quickly.

“The box from which you pick cherries should not have any rotten berries. Cherries with signs of fermentation, partially spoiled, can cause gastrointestinal upset,” the nutritionist warns. Olga Korablyova also claims that dense berries, without any moisture residue and with the stem intact, will be stored at room temperature for up to two days, and in the refrigerator for up to five days.
