Vegan tempeh bacon with homemade BBQ marinade

Ingredients for 1 servings:

  • 200g tempeh
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp applesauce
  • 2 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp Sriracha sauce
  • 1 tsp maple syrup
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp smoked paprika powder

Instructions

Working time approx. 5 minutes; Rest time approx. 12 hours; Cooking/baking time approx. 20 minutes; Total time approx. 12 hours 25 minutes

Mix the marinade ingredients and place them in an airtight container. Cut the tempeh into the thinnest slices possible and place them in the container. Rotate the container several times to ensure the marinade is evenly distributed. Refrigerate overnight. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Place the tempeh slices on a baking sheet and bake for 7-10 minutes on each side. Finally, grill for another 3 minutes to crisp the slices. Be careful not to burn them. The tempeh bacon is perfect as a topping for bread, with a vegan farmer’s breakfast, vegan English breakfast, or vegan scrambled eggs.
