What Happens if You Mix Cucumbers and Tomatoes: Health Risks and an Original Recipe

The cucumber and tomato season is in full swing here. These favorite vegetables of Ukrainians can be bought at a reasonable price and with practically any quality: cucumbers and tomatoes with crunchy and sweet juices.

But many people are concerned about the combination of cucumbers and tomatoes: there is an opinion that fresh cucumbers and tomatoes in one dish are almost a direct path to gastritis or, at least, stomach upset.

The compatibility of cucumbers and tomatoes – truth and myths

“Can cucumbers and tomatoes be mixed? This is a very common myth. Science has long ago refuted claims that stated the appropriateness of separate meals and the incompatibility of certain foods. Previously, it was believed that the cucumber has a certain enzyme that destroys vitamin C, which is contained in the tomato.

“In general, any fruits and vegetables can be eaten in combination, there are no bans on their incompatibility. Because in any case, when this food enters the stomach or further passes into the small intestine, it unhooks, interacts and the products are still mixed,” the doctor specified.

Gunkalo also commented on another theory that supposedly cucumbers are alkaline and tomatoes are sour: according to her, this is also untrue.

“For there is stomach acid in the stomach, and everything is neutralized by it. And the theory about the alkalization of the body – this is also the realm of mythology, it is irrelevant. Again, all fruits and vegetables can be combined. And on the contrary: there is already research in the world that in different countries from 80-90% of people consume much fewer vegetables than they should. Therefore, on the contrary, I encourage people to try more, mix and eat different fruits and vegetables, “- summed up the expert.
