The peel of some fruits is bitter or tough. Hardly anyone would think of eating the skin of these fruits. Typical examples are bananas, mangoes, or citrus fruits. In the case of citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges, and tangerines, the peel can also be heavily used. Other types of fruit, such as apples, are particularly healthy if you eat the skin as well. It is important that the shell is washed thoroughly beforehand to remove any harmful substances.

Many types of fruit have a particularly large number of healthy ingredients in or directly under their skin. If you remove the shell, they are lost without being used. Accordingly, with many types of fruit, it is advisable to eat them together with the peel. Common varieties include apples, pears, peaches, apricots, nectarines, and plums.

It is a common assumption that eating peel could be harmful to health because various pesticides are used in fruit growing. However, if you wash the treated fruit thoroughly, you can then eat it without hesitation. Washing also removes the natural or artificially applied layer of wax on apples, which helps to keep them longer. Although the layer is considered harmless to health anyway, it can leave an unpleasant, furry feeling on the tongue.

The peels of citrus fruits occupy a special position because they are always pre-treated with substances that are not suitable for consumption. Otherwise, they would spoil too quickly. The consumption of citrus fruits is nevertheless harmless since the peel is inedible anyway and is therefore not eaten. The use of untreated organic products is therefore recommended for lemon zest for baking or cooking or for adding chopped citrus fruits to drinks.
