Which Types of Fruit Can You Eat the Peel Of?

Spread the love

In the case of many types of fruit, most of the nutrients are in the skin or just below it. That’s why it’s best to eat the peel of fruit as well, as long as it’s edible, in order to benefit from the highest concentration of vitamins, trace elements, secondary plant substances, and dietary fiber.

If the fruit has been carefully washed, the peel can be eaten without worry, especially with pome and stone fruit. Fruits such as apples, pears, apricots, nectarines, or peaches and their variety – the flat peaches – fall into this category. In New Zealand, even the kiwi is eaten with its hairy skin. With grapes, cherries, strawberries, and other types of berries, on the other hand, hardly anyone would think of peeling them before eating. Rinse all fruit thoroughly with lukewarm water before consumption and then rub them dry with a kitchen towel.

Fruits with thick, leathery skins like bananas or avocados should be peeled. It is also better to peel citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons, melons, pomegranates, passion fruit, and papaya before eating them or simply scoop the flesh out of the peel without eating it.
