The original – ideal as a Christmas gift or souvenir
Core the apples with an apple corer, leaving a “hole” in the middle. Prepare 4 empty 230 ml jars. Mix the softened butter with the sugar and cinnamon. Stir in the almonds and raisins. Spoon the mixture into the apples. Place an apple in each jar (no need to grease the jars) and pour a small shot glass (2 cl) of apple juice over the apples. Bake the apples in the jars uncovered at 200°C (top/bottom heat, preheated) for about 30 minutes. When the apples are soft, remove the jars from the oven, wipe the rims thoroughly (clean rims are very important for the jars to create a vacuum), and screw the lids on tightly. The closed jars can be returned to the switched-off oven to cool. If the jars have a tight seal, the apples will keep for a while, just like preserved fruit. I can’t say anything about the exact shelf life because the apples get eaten up so quickly here… They can be eaten hot or cold. Simply heat a jar briefly in the microwave without the lid. They also taste good with vanilla sauce on top. They can be served in a jar; it looks pretty and is something different. Decorated nicely, perhaps with a sachet of vanilla sauce and a fir branch, they make a lovely homemade Christmas gift or souvenir.
