Why Apricots are Good for You: Properties, Contraindications and When to Eat Them

Apricots are often called “health fruits” for their beneficial properties and the huge amount of vitamins they contain. However, apricots also have contraindications. If you don’t take them into account, apricots will only do you harm.

What are the vitamins in apricots?

Apricot pulp contains a lot of sugars (mainly sucrose) and organic acids (tartaric, citric, malic, and salicylic acids), and nicotinic acid. Apricots also contain:

  • pectin,
  • carotene,
  • starch,
  • flavonoids and tannins (isoquercitrin, quercetin, lycopene, etc.)
  • minerals: iron, potassium, magnesium, iodine, sodium, and phosphorus;
  • vitamins B1, C, B2, P.

But apricot kernels can be dangerous to health: they contain dangerous hydrocyanic acid.

Why apricots are good for women and men

It will take a long time to list the beneficial properties of apricot. Let’s start with the fact that you can eat both fresh and dried apricots – the benefits will be the same.

After this delicacy, a person’s metabolism and blood formation improve. This fruit has a mild diuretic and laxative effect. It has a tonic and anti-atherosclerotic effect. In addition, apricot contains cellulose, which protects the colon from cancer, and reduces varicose veins, constipation, and hemorrhoids. Apricot also improves heart function and helps the body get rid of bad cholesterol.

How many apricots can you eat per day?

Women should eat no more than 300 grams of apricots per day, and for men, the norm of apricots per day is 400-450 grams.

When can you eat apricots?

It is better to eat apricots as a snack between meals – a few hours before breakfast or before dinner. At the same time, nutritionists say that you should not eat apricots on an empty stomach or immediately after eating for dessert. In this case, fruit acids will irritate your intestines.

Who should not eat apricots: contraindications

Fresh apricots should be avoided by those who have:

  • pancreatitis;
  • gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer;
  • acute gastritis with high acidity of gastric juice;
  • slow heart rate.

Apricot: calorie content and nutritional value

A couple of fresh apricots (weighing a total of 100 grams) contain:

  • 44 kcal;
  • 0.9 g of protein;
  • 9 g of carbohydrates;
  • 0.1 g of fat.

At the same time, most of them are made up of dietary fiber (2.1 g) and water (86 g).
