Buttermilk Bread with Fried Onions

The perfect buttermilk bread with fried onions recipe with a picture and simple step-by-step instructions.

  • 500 g Flour; possibly a little more
  • 500 ml Buttermilk
  • 1 dice Fresh yeast
  • 150 g Roasted onions
  • 2 tsp Sugar
  • 1,5 tsp Salt
  • Parchment paper
  1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees. Put a fireproof bowl with water in the oven. Line the baking sheet with parchment paper. The bread is baked directly. The dough does not need to “rise”.
  2. Crumble the yeast and mix well with the sugar until the yeast has dissolved. Mix the flour, salt, fried onions and buttermilk together. Add the yeast and knead everything into a smooth dough with your hands. If the dough is too sticky, knead in a little more flour.
  3. Shape the dough into a loaf. Or, as I did it here, shape it into a baguette. Make several cuts on the surface with a sharp knife, place on the baking sheet and bake in the hot oven for 45-50 minutes. Remove and let cool on a wire rack.
