an old recipe for American cookies, my father’s favorite

Cream the butter until creamy, then add the sugar while stirring, then add the eggs one at a time. Using a mixer on medium speed, mix everything until fluffy and smooth. Sift together the flour, cloves, and cinnamon, then reduce the speed to low and add to the mixture. Dissolve the baking soda in 1 tablespoon of boiling water and mix in. This will help it distribute evenly and prevent the cookies from spreading too far apart. Now fold in the raisins and nuts by hand. Finally, mix in the whiskey thoroughly. Cover and let rest in the refrigerator overnight, at least 8 hours, or longer if desired. Place a baking rack in the center of the oven and set the temperature at 175 degrees Celsius. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and, using two teaspoons, place the mixture onto the sheet, 5 cm apart. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes. Makes about 24 cookies.
