Aspartame: Low-calorie diet without health risks
- You can find sweeteners in a huge range of products. From energy drinks to fruit yogurts and especially in the product chain for diets. Look at the ingredient list to see which product contains aspartame. The marking is E 951 and is shown on the packaging.
- The maximum dosage per day is given as 40 milligrams per kilo of body weight. According to the EFSA, a person weighing 60 kg may and can consume 4.5 liters of a drink sweetened with aspartame per day without reaching the limit.
Aspartame – what is it exactly
- Aspartame is produced chemically and is highly soluble in water. The sweetener is a synthesis between two amino acids, aspartic acid, and phenylalanine.
- Since heat can hardly harm it, it is well suited for baking and cooking.
- Aspartame is about 200 times more concentrated in sweetness than conventional sugar.
- Aspartame is broken down very quickly and completely in the intestine.
Aspartame harmful only in phenylketonuria
- Aspartame is not harmful to health. Only people with a certain metabolic disease should avoid the sweetener.
- People who suffer from the metabolic disease phenylketonuria should not take aspartame.
- It is imperative for people with this limitation to follow a diet that is low in phenylalanine.
- This is an amino acid found in proteins. An amino acid that you also find in aspartame.
- Foods containing aspartame must therefore bear the notice “Contains a source of phenylalanine”.
