Not to Freeze and Not To Sweat: How to Dress Smartly in Cold Weather

In freezing weather, it can be difficult to choose clothes. It’s not uncommon for your feet to get cold and your body to sweat at the same time. In order to dress intelligently and distribute heat evenly, you need to know a few tricks for combining clothing.

Follow the principle of layering

In freezing weather, you should wear several layers of clothing for better heat retention. But just putting a T-shirt under a sweater is not right – in this case, the torso will sweat and the T-shirt will get wet. We advise using the principle of layering as follows.

  • The first layer of clothing – is thermal underwear. It will keep the body warm, and the sweat will take you to the next layer of clothing. Underwear made of natural fabrics can’t cope with this task well – it is better to buy things from high-quality synthetics.
  • The middle layer – is insulated clothing, such as a sweater and pants.
  • The top layer – a jacket, shoes and a hat.

This simple principle will help to choose a warm outdoor look for any weather. And at home, the first two layers will be enough.

Choose the right materials

Natural fabrics such as cotton are pleasant and good for the skin, but you should not wear them in winter. They do not retain heat and quickly get wet with sweat. Walking with wet socks and a wet T-shirt in winter is dangerous for your health. Therefore, it is recommended to choose underwear, socks, and T-shirts made of synthetic fabrics.

For a sweater or jacket, the best material in cold weather is fleece or natural wool. The such fabric has a good balance between thermal insulation and extra heat removal.

The choice of material for the jacket depends on what you do outdoors. Heavy sheepskin jackets can be walked around in, but for more active activities, lightweight membrane jackets are the ideal choice.

Cotton hats don’t retain heat well – they can make your head freeze. Hats made of natural fabrics are better replaced by thick hats made of acrylic and fleece.

When choosing shoes, pay attention that the sole is not made of rubber, otherwise, the feet will freeze.

How to dress warmly in cold weather – some tips

  • Wear two pairs of socks on your feet – synthetic ones on the bottom and woolen ones on top.
  • If you put on two pairs of pants – the upper should be looser. Then there will be air between the pants, which will provide thermal insulation.
  • Short pants in cold weather can cause frostbite on the ankles. Be sure to cover your legs completely.
  • Tuck your pants into your shoes if they are high enough.
  • If the wind blows on your feet, put two insoles in your shoes.
  • Put mustard pads under your feet to keep them warm in cold weather.
  • Choose loose winter shoes, so you can easily wiggle your toes. If your shoes are too tight, you will cut off circulation and your feet will freeze.
  • Do not spare money for a balaclava for the face – this thing is very helpful in cold weather.

What to Do If You Start Sweating in Cold Weather

Sweating in cold weather is very undesirable because you can catch a cold. If you feel that you began to sweat under clothing, you should quickly adjust your body temperature.

To begin with, it is necessary to slow down and reduce physical activity. Then take off a piece of clothing for a while to allow the body to give off excess heat, such as a hat or gloves.
