Buns are very popular in Germany, especially for breakfast. However, they are generally considered unhealthier than bread. Wrongly so: because basically, all grain products are equally healthy. The ingredients are so similar that bread or rolls provide roughly the same number of calories and nutrients.
Of course, this assumes that the quantity and the composition are the same: For example, you have to compare a wheat roll with wheat bread – and not with whole wheat bread. In addition, a single, normally cut slice of bread should not be compared to a roll: a roll usually weighs more and therefore has more calories.
Basically, for both bread and rolls, variants made from wholemeal flour are considered more favorable in terms of a balanced diet, as they contain a particularly large amount of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. If you want to eat low-carb, we recommend our Cloud Bread recipe as an alternative to bread and rolls. And for bread fans who would like to try something new, we have our crunchy No Knead Bread. It doesn’t need any kneading at all – and it’s full of flavor!
