Can You Freeze Eggs?

With the help of the right instructions, you can easily freeze eggs. It is important that you remove the shell and fill the egg yolk and white – either together or separately – into a freezer-safe container. The bowl itself is not enough. Because when you freeze chicken eggs, the albumen expands, causing them to crack. Counteract this with a glass, a plastic box for the freezer, or a tightly sealable freezer bag. One thing is certain: freezing eggs extends their shelf life by several months. If you freeze egg yolks, it is around eight to ten months, if you limit yourself to egg whites, even around twelve months.

Freeze raw eggs: prepare and thaw

When freezing cracked eggs, you can either separate them or put the yolks and whites together in the freezer. For variant number one, you should prepare the mass with a little salt or sugar. This will prevent the yolk from gelling due to the low temperatures. If you only use protein, this is not necessary. Whisk the mixture lightly before pouring it into the container. In any case, it is worth labeling this with the freezing date. In order to be able to use frozen eggs in portions after thawing, ice cube molds can also be used. If you want to thaw frozen eggs, be careful. First, put them in the fridge where they can slowly liquefy. A container of ice water also serves this purpose. Thawing at room temperature, on the other hand, is not an option.

Can you freeze boiled eggs?

In theory, you can also freeze boiled eggs. However, the consistency can change due to the cold temperatures. The protein in particular is often more reminiscent of rubber after thawing, which is why the process is not really worthwhile. Especially since the egg also tastes rather watery. If you don’t want to freeze them, you can store eggs in the fridge to extend their shelf life. However, once the best-before date has passed, you should only use them chilled for foods that you cook well. The same applies to eggs that you had frozen. It doesn’t matter for our eggnog. Its recipe focuses on already finished eggnog.
