Ingredients for 2 servings:

  • 1 onion(s), finely chopped
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 10 grains of allspice
  • 10 peppercorns
  • 5 gherkins (Spreewalder)
  • 1 point fish fillet(s) (matje herring)
  • 2 cups sour cream
  • possibly milk

Instructions

Working time approx. 10 minutes; Rest period approx. 1 day; Total time approx. 1 day 10 minutes

Chop the herring, cucumber, and onion. Mix with the remaining ingredients and let it sit in a covered bowl in the refrigerator. You may need to thin the sauce, which is thick due to the sour cream, with a splash of milk. The mixture should have the consistency of yogurt. Just one more night’s sleep and then enjoy with fresh boiled potatoes. Any extras like apples, etc., are a matter of taste and should only be tried the second time. The original is pure and without any frills.
