  • 4 handfuls of onion skins
  • 1 tbsp oil

Instructions

Working time approx. 5 minutes; Cooking/baking time approx. 30 minutes; Total time approx. 35 minutes

traditional Ukrainian cuisine

Place the onion skins in a pot, place the raw eggs on top, cover with the onion skins, and pour in water. Boil the eggs in the broth for about 20-30 minutes, remove and let cool. Rub the cooled eggs with a little oil. Note: For patterned Easter eggs, wrap the young leaves of parsley, dill, daisies, etc. around the raw egg. Stretch a section of pantyhose around the egg, tie it tightly with thread, like a bag, and dye it in the onion skin broth as described above. Very traditional and typically Ukrainian in Ukraine are the artfully painted Easter eggs known as pysanky (literally “written Easter eggs”). Various colorful patterns are applied to the eggs using hot beeswax and a fine feather. Ukrainian pysanky are unique works of art and are painted exclusively by women and girls.
