the ideal food for a hearty feast

This dish is incredibly easy to prepare and is ideal for any boozy party. It also makes a great buffet spread and tastes great both hot and cold. First, preheat the oven (180°C) and bake the baguette rolls for about 5 minutes. Meanwhile, peel and finely dice the onion. Remove the rolls from the oven and cut them in half lengthwise. Hollow out each half, making sure the crust remains intact. This is best done with a teaspoon. Put the crumbs from 9-10 roll halves into a bowl, pour in a little milk, and let them soften (the remaining crumbs can be used for other purposes – see tip below). In another bowl, mix the minced meat with the diced onion, eggs, salt, and pepper. Squeeze out the milk-soaked roll dough well and add it to the minced meat in the bowl. Then add 6 tablespoons of ketchup and knead everything thoroughly. In the next step, the minced meat mixture is stuffed into the dry, hollowed-out bun halves, just enough to create a slight dome on top. The buns are then placed in a hot oven (180°C) for about 35-40 minutes, until the minced meat has taken on a nice brown color. If you are using grated cheese, you can skip the following step: Cut the cheese slices into approximately 1 cm wide strips (to later place them on the bun halves as a grid). At the end of the baking time, just before the end of the baking time, sprinkle the cheese on the bun halves or place them on top as a grid and bake everything for a few more minutes until the cheese has melted nicely or, if desired, is lightly browned. The buns are best served warm with a cold beer, but they are also delicious cold. Alternatively, you can also serve them with a little ketchup. Tip: You don’t have to throw away the crumbs from the other bun halves. You can prepare them as follows: Mix with a little milk, 2-3 tablespoons of spiced ketchup, pepper, and salt, knead, form into rolls, and bake in the oven. This way, you’ll end up with delicious tomato-flavored bread rolls.
