Freezing a Smoothie: What You Should Know About It

If there is any leftover from a delicious smoothie, you may want to freeze the rest to extend its shelf life. Here we explain how this works and what you should bear in mind.

Freeze the smoothie to extend its shelf life

A fresh smoothie can be stored in the refrigerator for between 12 and 24 hours.

  • If you want to extend the shelf life or mix smoothies yourself in advance, freezing is a good option.
  • It is best to put the fresh smoothie in an ice cube mold in the freezer.
  • If you want to be quick in the morning, simply add three or four smoothie cubes to the blender.
  • Tip: If you know in advance that you want to freeze the smoothie, make it a little thicker. After thawing, the smoothie usually becomes more liquid.
  • Green smoothies are best for freezing.

Freeze smoothies with fruit

Nutrients are hardly lost when freezing smoothies.

  • With fruit smoothies, however, the drink may look less appetizing after defrosting.
  • Cut fruit often discolors. You can avoid this by adding a few squeezes of lemon juice to the smoothie before freezing it.
  • Alternatively, you can freeze a green smoothie and refine it with other ingredients, such as fruit, when it is thawed in the blender.
