Freezing Egg Yolks: Here’s How

Here’s how you can freeze egg yolks

You should pay attention to the following points so that you can actually consume it again after freezing the yolk.

  • First, beat the yolk with a fork and add a little salt or sugar, depending on whether you want to use it to make a sweet or savory dish.
  • Both ingredients ensure that the egg yolk regains its original consistency after thawing. Without salt or sugar, the yolk will be sticky, chewy, and inedible after thawing.
  • Pour the mixture into an airtight container. Make sure that this is not too big and thus traps too much air.
  • However, there should still be enough room inside for the yolk to spread as it freezes. Avoid metal containers, otherwise, the yolk will taste metallic.
  • When frozen, egg yolk can be kept for about ten months. So that you do not exceed this period of time, you should definitely write the freezing date on the container. Spoiled eggs trigger food poisoning.
  • If you want to defrost your egg yolk again, it is advisable to do this slowly in the refrigerator. The cold chain must be secured. If raw eggs are left at room temperature for too long, they spoil quickly.
  • Once thawed, you should process the egg yolk on the same day and heat it up well before consumption.
