French Fries Duel: Sweet Potato Vs. Potato Fries

Spread the love

Sure – fries are made of potatoes, are greasy and unhealthy – but delicious. We compare sweet potato fries with regular potato fries. What is revealed in the duel in terms of calories, taste and co.?

Delicious right! Less greasy and unhealthy, and that they always have to be made of potatoes – not at all! The latest coup in the kitchen: sweet potato fries – nutty in taste and sweet on the tongue. Sweet potato fries are trending. But does that make them better? Which variant is healthier? And which one tastes better? We present the fries duel.

The taste

First of all: botanically, sweet potatoes have nothing to do with potatoes. The two tubers also differ significantly in terms of taste. While the taste of potatoes has become bland and boring to us, sweet potatoes are trumping with a new flavor. They are sweeter on the tongue and carry the flavors of pumpkin, carrot and chestnut.

The ingredients and calories

Sweet potato fries are the healthy alternative to greasy fast food – we know that. But is that true? Gourmets are not entirely wrong. Sweet potatoes are particularly impressive due to their high content of vitamin A, vitamin C and iron.

Potatoes can’t compete here. But what they can do is win the duel in the calorie check. The yellow tuber is low in carbohydrates, fats and calories. 100 grams of potatoes have 76 kcal per 100 grams. How many calories do sweet potatoes have? 100 grams have 86 kcal. But – the sweet potato has a lower glycemic index. It allows the blood sugar levels to rise more slowly and thus ensures a longer feeling of satiety.

In the fries duel

Why make it complicated when it can be easy? The seduction is great! The trip to the supermarket or to the chip shop is pre-programmed: greasy potato fries as far as the eye can see. It’s different with sweet potato fries. The reddish tubers have to be cleaned, cut and baked – not in the fryer, but in the oven. The workload: higher. The result: at least as delicious. And healthier.

So why not just grab a potato in the future; peel them, chop them and process them into healthy potato fries – in the oven, of course. Then we can enjoy both fries variants without a bad conscience. And from time to time we look forward to a homemade currywurst.
