The grenadilla is a tropical fruit from the passion fruit family. The peach-sized fruits have a hard, smooth yellow-orange skin. In overripe fruits it is often mottled with brown. The jelly-like, sweet and aromatic pulp is eaten together with the black seeds.
Origin
Colombia, Brazil.
Taste
The aroma of grenadilla is less acidic and intense than that of passion fruit. It is also often referred to as “sweet passion fruit”.
Use
Grenadillas are valued above all as an ingredient for refreshing, fruity drinks. Halve the fruit and scoop out the flesh with a spoon. To separate the seeds, simply push the fruit through a sieve. Or enjoy the pure fruit straight from your hand: Simply scoop out the pulp from the half of the fruit, like you would with a kiwi. The aroma of grenadilla goes well with dairy products and is therefore suitable as an ingredient in desserts based on milk ice cream, yoghurt or quark. Grenadilla seeds are also suitable as a crunchy addition to morning muesli.
Storage
Ripe grenadillas only keep for a few days at room temperature.
