delicious grog with a kick for the cold days

Combine all ingredients except the rum in a saucepan, bring to a boil, and simmer for about 10 minutes. Strain through a tea strainer into a mug, heatproof grog glass, etc., and add rum to taste. I personally like it a bit sweeter, so I add 2 level teaspoons of brown sugar. Honey, syrup, etc. will probably work too.
